About The Barangay
Barangay Langub is the fifth largest barangay in the municipality of Asturias in terms of population. The barangay has 1,125 households with a total population of 4,879 inhabitants. It has anaggregate land area of 625 hectares which is bound in the north by Barangay San Roque, in the south by Barangay Looc Norte, in the east by the Tańon Strait, and in the west by Barangay Tubod.
The barangay got its name from the local term for cave since there was a cave in the barangay located on a hillside facing the sea. In Cebuano dialect, a cave, which is a hollow chamber of rock, is called "langub". This eventually became the name of the barangay. The early settlers in the community were farmers and fisher folks. It was believed that the "langub" was the main "lighthouse" of the fishermen in order to navigate their way home after an overnight fishing expedition. The "langub" also served as a safe refuge for the early settlers during storms. Local tale told from generation to generation had it that the cave was part of a long complex cave system which would cross the mountains and had an exit chamber facing a farm.
Aside from farming and fishing, the settlers in the community discovered that the soil in the barangay was not just good for farming but would make an excellent material for pottery making. This paved the way for the development of artisan craftsmanship of pottery making in the community. Older women learned to create beautiful pieces from clay; some of the common ceramic products were clay cookware, clay jars, clay vases, clay vessels, and many others. This artisan craftsmanship made the barangay the center for pottery making in the municipality. To further support the local pottery makers, a kiln dry facility was established in the barangay to help dry the clay products. However, this was just short-lived. A disastrous typhoon in the early 1990's, "Rufing", destroyed the facility. After the typhoon, the facility was never restored which led to the slowly fading of pottery craftsmanship in the barangay through time. Advancement in modern civilization also contributed for the craft tobe forgotten. As of these days, there are just only a handful of locales who continue to do the once popular artisan craftsmanship of pottery making in the barangay.
