President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12326, fixing the term of office of elected Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials at five (5) years.

With the new law, the next regular Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) will be held on the second Monday of November 2028, with succeeding regular elections to be conducted every five years thereafter. This moves the BSKE from its previously scheduled date of November 2, 2026.

For elective barangay officials, the law provides a limit of two consecutive terms in the same position, while elected SK officials are limited to one term in the same position. Incumbent elective barangay officials covered by the extension will be considered to have served one full term.

As President Marcos emphasized, the additional time in office is also additional time for public service and accountability, an opportunity to complete ongoing programs and give greater attention to the needs of communities, families, and the youth.
